Welcome.

Drilling for sediments on the Baltic Sea on IODP Expedition 347 in 2013. Past and ongoing projects are aimed at reconstructing the distribution of low oxygen conditions in the Baltic through the Holocene.

We'll be returning to the Baltic successively over the next two years as part of an exciting collaboration with WHOI, URI, and IOW to evaluate Mn, I, O, and N (or MnION!!) cycling links in suboxic zones.

Welcome to the Hardisty lab home page!

The Hardisty lab studies the history of ocean and atmosphere chemistry on Earth. Focus includes understanding the impacts of photosynthesis and oxygen production on geochemical cycles and biological evolution over the last 3 billion years; but also comprises reconstruction of marine biogeochemical cycles over the last hundreds to thousands of years in order to gauge the impacts of humans on our environment. This work ultimately requires a thorough understanding of the relevant chemical cycles in the modern ocean/atmosphere, ways in which these are archived in the sediment record, and reconstruction of and constraints on the records themselves. Follow the headers at the top of the page for more details on past and ongoing research.

We are currently searching for curious and self-driven students and postdocs to lead the next steps. The Hardisty research group represents a new addition to MSU's Earth and Environmental Science program and will strive for a collaborative team that supports each other in achieving the best scientific results while enjoying the challenges along the way.  As is outlined in the laboratory and research pages of this website, our research questions require a combination of state-of-the-art laboratory techniques and field work to collect both seawater and sediments. Depending on the project, the project site could be aboard a research vessel at sea, MSU's own clean lab facilities, or at any number of institutions and universities with the necessary instruments and tools.
