Welcome.

Drilling for sediments on the Baltic Sea on IODP Expedition 347 in 2013. Past and ongoing projects are aimed at reconstructing the distribution of low oxygen conditions in the Baltic through the Holocene.

We just returned to the Baltic Sea in April 2024 as part of an exciting collaboration with WHOI and IOW (among others) to evaluate Mn, I, O, and N (or MnION!!) cycling links in suboxic zones.

Welcome to the Hardisty lab home page!

Our lab studies the history of ocean and atmosphere chemistry on Earth. Focus includes understanding the impacts of photosynthesis and oxygen production on geochemical cycles and biological evolution over the last 3 billion years; but also comprises reconstruction of marine biogeochemical cycles over the last hundreds to thousands of years in order to gauge the impacts of humans on our environment. This work ultimately requires a thorough understanding of the relevant chemical cycles in the modern ocean/atmosphere, ways in which these are archived in the sediment record, and reconstruction of and constraints on the records themselves. Follow the headers at the top of the page for more details on past and ongoing research.
